Satellite images show rare earth mining operations at two main sites in Yon. The first, 3.6 km east of the Kok River, is set to begin operations in mid-2023, and the second, 2.6 km west, is set to begin operations in mid-2024. The mine features a series of circular lagoons that are similar to rare earth mines in Kachin State that mine terbium and dysprosium by Chinese companies. The extraction process involves pouring highly toxic chemicals into hillsides to dissolve the ore, pumping it into ponds and adding chemicals to separate the rare earths, a highly environmentally damaging process.
